Science books for children

Professor Aesop's - The crow and the pitcher illustrated and interpreted by Stephanie Gwyn Brown

This well-known fable has been adapted to teach scientific method. The crow solves his problem of getting water out of the pitcher using a step-by-step process. Stephanie Gwyn Brown combines traditional and digital media to create bright colorful and fun illustrations. The last page is an explanation of the scientific method's six steps.

Mad Margret experiments with scientific method by Eric Braun

Mad Margret is mad about science. She uses the scientific method to figure out the cause of Jasper's sneezing.

Start with science series with Oscar the Cat by Geoff Waring

These science picture books introduces children to the core science concepts of moving and rolling, sound, light and dark , electricity, growing and things we use.

---------------------------------------------------

First look: science

Another fabulous series is First look : science. Children learn about the natural world through simple text and pleasant watercolor illustrations. Science concepts covered are seasons, forces and motion, water cycle, plant cycle, life cycle of a tree, life cycle of a butterfly and life cycle of a frog (pictured above).

---------------------------------------------------

Sky tree : Seeing science through art by Thomas Locker

Published in 1995, this is an oldie but a goodie! I love this book and it would be a great addition to any unit about seasons. The illustrations are just gorgeous. On a side note - Thomas Locker is a painter who loves nature. This is evident in all his books. Click HERE if you would like for more information about Thomas Locker's books.

---------------------------------------------------

The busy tree by Jennifer Ward

This book is an amazing exploration of an oak-tree habitat. Written in rhyme, it describes the different parts of an oak tree and why they are important to the forest animals. The oil painting illustrations by Lisa Falkenstern are wonderful.

---------------------------------------------------

Albert Einstein: Scientist and genius by Suzanne Slade

Learn how a shy boy grows up to make groundbreaking discoveries about space, time and energy. The text is enhanced by the colorful illustrations and the book includes a time line of Einstein’s life and a page with other interesting facts about his life.

---------------------------------------------------

100 people who made history : Meet the people who shaped the modern world by Ben Gilliland

This book is not just about important scientists but, as the name suggests, it is about great thinkers. There are inventors, philosophers, economists, politicians, explorers, and other ideas people. As you can see the book has an attractive layout, with small amounts of information. Just enough to spark students' interest in a famous scientist or other influential figure.

And finally, I stumbled across a blog - BRAIN PICKINGS. It lists science books published in 2012. I will be adding these to my personal reading list. Can't wait to try them!

Popular series - DC Super-Pets & Frankly, Frannie

DC Super-Pets is a series we added to the collection this year. The children just love them & we can't keep them on the shelf. Each super-pet is linked to a superhero. At the beginning of each book there is a two page spread telling you about the super-pet. The illustrations are colorful and fun. The text is large and highlights sound effects and expressions with special, colorful font. Click HERE to find out about more about DC Super-Pets.

Frankly, Frannie by AJ Stern is an absolute fun read. It reminds me a little bit of Charlie & Lola. Frannie, the main character wants to be grown up and wants a job where she has a briefcase and business cards. The books are written using Frannie's voice and include some made up kid words. The illustrations are black and white. The text is large and words and sentences are highlighted with different fonts. Click HERE if you would like to learn more about Frannie.

2013 Caldecott Winner - This is not my hat by Jon Klassen

PS If the children had of been judges, they would have given Creepy Carrots the golden sticker! Green also received a lot of the votes -- but not nearly as many as Creepy Carrots.
